Why check
What an SSL certificate is and why you should check it
An SSL certificate is a website's digital ID that enables a secure HTTPS connection. It keeps the data exchanged between a visitor and the server confidential and intact.
Regular checks help you catch a problem before your customers notice it. If the certificate is installed incorrectly, the chain of trust is broken or the name on the certificate does not match the site address, the browser shows a warning and may block access. That drives visitors away and hurts your reputation.
What a valid certificate gives you
- Encrypts data between the site and the user and protects it from interception
- Removes the Not secure warning in the browser
- Builds customer trust and improves conversion
- Helps with SEO: search engines take HTTPS into account in rankings
Why SSL
Why your website needs an SSL certificate
HTTPS has long been a must: without it, browsers warn visitors, and forms and payments are not secure.

Visitor trust
The padlock in the address bar shows that the connection to the site is secure.

Data encryption
Passwords, contact details and payment data are transmitted in encrypted form.

Search rankings
Search engines take HTTPS into account when ranking websites.

Secure forms and payments
Request and payment forms work over a secure connection.

No warnings
The browser does not scare visitors with a Your connection is not private message.

Organization validation
OV and EV certificates confirm that a real company stands behind the site.
Diagnostics
What errors an SSL check finds
Checking the certificate and its chain is a key diagnostic step. Installation errors trigger browser warnings, erode trust and drive visitors away.
Expired certificate
The most common reason a browser blocks access to a site.
Incomplete chain
The intermediate certificate is missing, so some browsers and devices do not trust the site.
Name mismatch
The certificate was issued for another domain or does not cover www or a subdomain.
Outdated algorithms
Insecure protocols and ciphers are in use.
Certificate types
DV, OV, EV, Wildcard and multi-domain certificates
Certificates differ in how thoroughly the owner is validated and how many addresses they protect. Encryption is equally strong for every type.
| Parameter | DV | OV | EV | Wildcard | Multi-domain (SAN) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| What is validated | Domain ownership | Domain and organization | Extended company validation | Domain (or organization) | Domain, organization or EV |
| Documents required | No | Yes | Yes | Depends on the level | Depends on the level |
| What it protects | One domain | One domain | One domain | A domain and all its first-level subdomains | Several different domains |
| Company name in the certificate | No | Yes | Yes | OV version | OV/EV version |
| Best for | Blogs, landing pages, business card sites | Online stores, corporate websites | Banks, finance, large e-commerce | Projects with subdomains | Groups of sites and portals |

How to choose
How to choose an SSL certificate
The right type depends on what the site does and how sensitive the data it handles is.
Blog, landing page, portfolio
DV is enough: minimal paperwork and a padlock in the address bar.
Store or company website
OV confirms that a real legal entity stands behind the site.
Finance and public sector
EV offers the highest level of organization validation.
Many subdomains
Wildcard protects a domain and all its subdomains with a single certificate.
Several domains
A multi-domain (SAN) certificate brings different addresses together.
Site on our hosting
Free Let's Encrypt is already included at no extra cost.
If it is expiring
What to do if your certificate is about to expire
When SSL stops working, browsers show visitors warnings and trust in the site drops. It is better to take care of renewal in advance.

Does the server location affect how SSL works?
No, a certificate works the same in any country. But for sites with an international audience it is especially important to install the full certificate chain, otherwise some devices may not trust the site.
Can an SSL certificate slow down my site?
Modern encryption algorithms are lightweight and have no noticeable impact on page load speed.
What is a Wildcard certificate?
It is a certificate that protects the main domain and all its first-level subdomains. It suits projects with a complex structure.
Can I use one certificate for several domains?
Yes, that is what multi-domain SAN (Subject Alternative Name) certificates are for. They support up to 100 domains.
What happens when a certificate is revoked?
The certificate authority invalidates the certificate and browsers stop trusting it, so visitors see an insecure connection warning.
Why check the OCSP status?
OCSP lets you find out in real time whether a certificate has been revoked, without downloading certificate revocation lists (CRL).
What is HSTS and how does it relate to SSL?
HTTP Strict Transport Security makes the browser always open the site over HTTPS and protects against protocol downgrade attacks.
How does SSL affect SEO?
Google and Yandex take HTTPS into account in rankings, while certificate errors lead to warnings and lost traffic.
What is Certificate Transparency?
These are public logs where certificate authorities record every certificate they issue. Monitoring them helps you spot certificates issued for your domain without your knowledge.
Can I check the SSL of a mail server?
Yes, the certificate chain can also be checked for the SMTP, IMAP and POP3 mail protocols using dedicated tools.
What is Forward Secrecy and why does it matter?
It is a property that ensures a future compromise of the server's private key will not allow traffic intercepted today to be decrypted. That is why the server should support ciphers with PFS.
When is a certificate considered trusted?
Only if its root and intermediate certificates are present in the trust stores of operating systems and browsers. Otherwise users will see an insecure connection warning.
