Guide
How to move a domain from one account to another
Sometimes you simply need to move a domain from one account to another on the same platform. In other cases it is a more complex procedure: handing the domain over to another individual or legal entity. The key is knowing how it all works, which helps you avoid mistakes that lead to losing the domain name.
Alternative handover options
Read moreCollapse
- A written application from the domain owner, for example if account access is lost or rights are transferred under a contract.
- A rights transfer form, when you need to transfer the rights to a domain name without access to the control panel.
- Re-registration of the domain on a change of ownership: handing the domain name over to another person under a sale and purchase agreement.
Changing hosting together with the domain
Sometimes, along with the account handover, the website needs to move to another hosting plan, VPS or dedicated server. In that case you will also need to change the DNS records, which specify where the website is physically hosted. Be sure to make a backup of the website before the move.
Special cases: CMS and platforms
If the website runs on WordPress and moves to another domain, besides DNS you will need to update the configuration and the URLs in the CMS database.
Moving a domain between accounts gives you flexibility in management: you can delegate rights, hand over a project or split responsibilities. The key is to follow the steps in the right order.
